Background: Health information system is one of the six building blocks of the health system and foundation of decision-making across all health system components. Continuous information use and data quality is critical for better decision which is crucial to improve the health status of the community at large. However, data quality and information use are remain weak in Ethiopia in general. This study will have greater input to program managers for designing programs, proper implementation and evaluation of their contribution for CHIS also it could serve as base line for further study.
Objective: To assess Community health management information system performance and determinants to its implementation in Health posts of Gurage Zone
Method: Facility based cross sectional study conducted on 329 HEW from 165 Health posts found in Gurage zone from December 8-19,2014. Structured and semi-structured questions were used to collect data by trained data collectors then data entered by using Epi info version 3.5.3 and analyzed by using SPPS version 20 where by Bivariate and multivariate analysis done.
Result: The CHMIS is good in report completeness (87.9%) content completeness of report(87.3%),calculating indicators(92.2%)data display(95%) but low in data accuracy(32.7%) discussions on performance(40.6%) decisions made(24.3%).Availability of CHMIS training manual, tally sheets and supportive supervision had significant association with CHMIS performance
Conclusion and recommendation: The Community HMIS is good in regard report completeness, data analysis, data display but there is low findings in data accuracy, data interpretation, decision making, competence for HMIS tasks and availability of CHMIS materials. Capacity building training, effective supportive supervision, availing reference materials and CHMIS tools should get due emphasis to improve the CHMIS performance.
