Background: Adolescent and youth sexual and reproductive health is a public health priority. But, equitable access and utilization of adolescent and youth sexual and reproductive health services is affected by different reasons. Among this the attitudes of healthcare providers may affect health services and also the implementation of policies and/or programs.
Objective: To assess healthcare provider’s attitude and barriers for provision of adolescent, youth sexual and reproductive health services in public primary health care units in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Methods: Facility based cross-sectional study with both quantitative and qualitative methods among 422 systematic randomly selected health care providers of primary health care units of Addis Ababa. A pre-tested close ended structured questionnaire was used to collect data. In-depth interview, Desk review and observation were also conducted. The coding for quantitative data done by using original English version and entered to EPI 7.2.2.6 software and exported to Statistical Package for Social Science version 20.0 software. The qualitative data was analyzed using thematic analysis by importing the translated text into the Open Code software version 4.02.
Results: Out of the total 422 health workers contacted, 377 care providers were included in this study with response rate of 89.33%. The finding indicated that 197(52.3%) and close to half 180(47.7%) of participants have positive and negative attitude towards provision of adolescents, youth sexual reproductive health service, respectively.
Conclusion & recommendation: Close to half of providers has displayed negatives attitudes due to different barriers and other health care providers had positive attitudes toward sexual and reproductive health to adolescents and youth. However, So, we need to solve problems and barriers related to negative attitude of providers to have positive attitude.
