Abstract:
Background: Financial barriers are major bottlenecks of access and use of health services. The majority of the poor around the world have to rely on their own resources to finance medical expenditures. The Ethiopian government has recognized Community Based Health Insurance for financing health care services and cutting out-of-pocket spending for medical care. However the uptake of CBHI scheme is very low. Therefore, identifying factors affecting uptake of community based health insurance is essential to help the scale up of the program nationwide.
Objective: To assess up-take of community based health insurance scheme and associated factors in Sododache Woreda.
Methods: Community based Cross-sectional study design was conducted to assess uptake and factors affect uptake of CBHI scheme in sododache woreda using Interviewer administered questioner and then the data was entered to EPI info then exported to SPSS for cleaning and analyzing and descriptive analyses was used and furthermore, a multivariable logistic regression was done to identify most important factors which affect uptake of CBHI.
Result: According to the findings of this study, 76% [95%CI: 72.6%, 79.2%] of households use CBHI. Age of households 36-44 AOR 1.868 [95%CI: 1.069, 3.264], Household income AOR 0.475 [95%CI: 0.322, 0.701] and past experience of financial problem to get health service AOR 15.37[95%CI: 4.08, 57.87] were found statistically significantly associated with uptake of CBHI.
Conclusion and Recommendation: uptake of CBHI in sodo dache wereda was higher than other woredas in Ethiopia. Age of head of households, household monthly income and past experience of financial problem to get health service showed a significant association with uptake. The District health office should improve the quality of health services. The wereda CBHI scheme should give CBHI ID card for all members and the regional government should determine the premium by considering the income of each households in order to sustain the uptake of CBHI.
