dc.description.abstract Abstract Background – Neural Tube Defects are the most common congenital malformations in humans affecting the development of central nervous system with more than 300,000 babies being born with neural tube defects each year, worldwide. However, the burden of the disease condition in relation to the quality of life of the mothers of children with NTDs is not significantly studied in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Objective – To determine the health related-quality of life and associated factors of mothers of children with neural tube defect attending follow up at pediatric neuro-surgery clinic in selected government hospital of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Method – Institution based; cross-sectional study was conducted among mothers of children with neural tube defect in Zewditu Memorial Hospital. The study included 422 mothers who have children with neural tube defect which is calculated using single proportion formula assuming 50% prevalence. Systematic random sampling was used to select participants. Paper based data collection using interviewer-administered, World health organization health related quality of life questionnaire was conducted then data entry was done using Epi info version 7.2 and exported to Stata version 17. for analysis. Bivariable analysis and multi variable logistic regression analysis was used to explore factors associated to quality of life of the mothers. Result-In this study the result found was 51.4%of mothers had a good health-related quality of life, while 48.6% had poor health-related quality of life. In the study health related quality of life was associated with factors which include education, wealth index, and satisfaction with counseling at health facilities and age of the mother 40 and above. Conclusion and recommendation-Fifty- one percent of mothers have good health related quality of life while 48.8%of them have a poor health related quality of life. Factors associated with HRQOL include education level of the mothers; age greater than 40, satisfaction with counseling, and higher wealth index. Recommend strategies to enhance the HRQOL of the mothers. This includes education and awareness programs, targeted counseling services and support for younger mothers.
