Abstract:
Background: Globally, TB is one of the top 10 causes of death and the leading cause of death from a single infectious agent. Drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) is increasing in a different country and its burden is poorly understood in resource-limited settings. This study was conducted to identify the prevalence and determine the associated factor of rifampicin-resistant tuberculosis among tuberculosis-presumptive cases at Tirunesh Beijing general hospital, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Method: The institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted on patients registered in Tirunesh Beijing Hospital, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from June 2018 to June 2020. A total 715
all presumptive TB cases were included in the study. The data which was processed by Gene Xpert MTB/ RIF assay was extracted and included in the present study. Data were analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS® 21) and descriptive statistics and a regression model was used to describe the study participants about Age, Sex, HIV infection, Residential and Tuberculosis, and treatment.
Result: All presumptive tuberculosis patients were included in the study, of which 19.2% were diagnosed as Mycobacterium tuberculosis cases. The proportion of Rif-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis among confirmed Mycobacterium tuberculosis cases in the current study was 9.5 %. Among the study participants, 3 (0.4%) were HIV seropositive. In this study, Age less than 40 and Gender was significantly associated with RR-MBT (AOR: 0.210, 95% CI 0.043-0.936; P = 0.003) and (AOR: 0.100, 95% CI 0.012-0.820, P=0.001) respectively.
Conclusion: Rifampicin-resistant TB is prevalent among male participants and in new TB cases of patients. Gender and age less than 40 years were significantly associated with rifampicin resistance. Therefore, early detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and increasing the awareness of Drug resistance Mycobacterium tuberculosis for the community is crucial for the management of Rifampicin resistance tuberculosis.
