The FMOH has allocated a budget to build a modern laboratory and office complex to AHRI and a total&#13;
of 5401.17 m2&#13;
&#13;
land within the ALERT compound is allocated for this purpose. The total floor area of the&#13;
&#13;
complex will be 23,828.48m2&#13;
.&#13;
&#13;
In 2017, the engineering team from FMOH and a committee established at AHRI has been facilitating&#13;
the selection of a consultant company. The team critically evaluated the submitted documents including&#13;
the architectural designs in consultation with the AHRI management and as a result Yohannes Abbay&#13;
Consulting Architects and Engineers won the bid.

Armauer Hansen Research Institute
During the year 2018 AHRI has continued to move forward with the focus of achieving its strategic&#13;
objectives and ensuring the contribution towards its broader mission of improving medical care,&#13;
health and well-being of the public by generating scientific evidence. The research and innovation&#13;
activities have been focused primarily on addressing the identified public health priority needs of the&#13;
country and in line with the plan to achieve global health sustainable development goals (SDGs). This&#13;
year, a total of 66 research projects have been either completed or ongoing and 50 were published&#13;
in international and local peer-reviewed journals. The institute provided research support to 51 Ph.D.&#13;
and 16 MSc postgraduate students from local and international partner universities. During 2018, the&#13;

Armauer Hansen Research Institute
The Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI) is a medical research institute established in 1970 by the Government of Ethiopia in&#13;
collaboration with Save the Children Organizations of Norway and Sweden, and University of Bergen. It was named after the&#13;
Norwegian physician, Gerhard Henrik Armauer Hansen, who first described the leprosy bacillus (Mycobacterium leprae).

In line with the mandate that was given to it by the Ethiopian Government, AHRI has continued to be&#13;
actively engaged in biomedical research. This report summarizes the research activities and outputs&#13;
of AHRI in the 2022/2023 calendar year. In addition, activities that emanated from the new extended&#13;
mandate have been included in relevant sections even though not reflected in outcome and output&#13;
summary tables. The report is intended to communicate AHRI’s research findings and transfer of new&#13;
or improved technologies to policymakers, the community, healthcare professionals, the private&#13;
sector, and other stakeholders in the form of research digest, policy, issue briefs, and prototypes.
